Alberta is unusually hard on roofing, and the damage arrives from four directions at once. Hail is the headline: Calgary and the corridor running north through Airdrie and Red Deer see more damaging hail events than anywhere else in the country, and the damage is often invisible from the ground. A hailstone doesn't have to break a shingle to end its life — it only has to fracture the fibreglass mat beneath the granules. That bruise sheds granules over the following seasons, the asphalt underneath oxidizes in the UV, and a roof that looked fine after the storm starts leaking three years later.

Chinook wind is the second force. Warm, dry gusts funnel off the mountains at highway speeds and find every shingle that was nailed high, nailed short, or never properly sealed. Wind damage concentrates at rakes, ridges and the first courses above the eave, which is exactly where an installer under time pressure cuts corners. Correct nailing placement and count is not a detail — it is the difference between a roof that rides out a 100 km/h gust and one that peels.

Third is the freeze-thaw cycle, which is more extreme here than almost anywhere in Canada because chinooks can swing the temperature 30 degrees in an afternoon. Any water that has found its way into a seam expands as it freezes, opens the seam a little wider, and lets more water in on the next cycle. This is why flashing detail matters so much more in Calgary than in a climate with a single steady freeze.

Fourth is ice damming, which is really a ventilation problem wearing a weather costume. Heat escaping into an unbalanced attic melts snow on the upper roof; the meltwater runs down to the cold overhang, refreezes and builds a ridge of ice that ponds water behind it and forces it back up under the shingles. No shingle is designed to resist standing water pushed uphill. The fix is not a bigger heat cable — it is intake at the soffit, exhaust at the ridge, and insulation that keeps the attic near outdoor temperature.

Asphalt shingle roofing is the workhorse — the material on the overwhelming majority of Calgary homes, available from budget three-tab through thick architectural laminates and up to Class 4 impact-rated products engineered for hail. It is the right answer for most houses, and the grade you choose is where the real decision sits.

Roof replacement and reroofing is the full-scope job: tear off the old material down to the deck, repair what the tear-off exposes, rebuild the underlayment and flashing system, and install new. It is the right call when the roof is at or near the end of its service life, when there are already two layers on the house, or when an insurer has approved a full replacement after a storm.

Roof repair and maintenance handles everything short of that — a leak around a chimney, lifted shingles after a windstorm, failed pipe boots, a valley that was never flashed properly. Repair is the honest answer far more often than the industry admits, and we will tell you when it is, even though the replacement is the larger invoice.

Storm and hail damage roofing is its own discipline because the work is only half the job; the other half is documentation. Photographing damage in a way an adjuster accepts, measuring accurately, writing a scope that matches the loss, and being on-site when the adjuster inspects is what turns a disputed claim into an approved one.

A roof is not a layer of shingles. It is an assembly, and the parts you never see decide how long the part you do see lasts. Starting at the deck: sheathing has to be sound, dry and properly spaced, and anything soft, delaminated or rotten gets replaced rather than covered. Shingling over bad decking is the single most common shortcut in this trade, and it guarantees a callback.

Above the deck comes the water barrier. Alberta code requires ice-and-water membrane at the eaves; we run it further than the minimum and add it in every valley and around every penetration, because valleys and penetrations are where nearly all leaks actually begin. Synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the field — lighter, stronger and far more tear-resistant than the felt it replaced.

Then the metal. Drip edge at eaves and rakes, new step flashing where the roof meets a wall, counter-flashing at chimneys, and properly sized valley metal. Reusing old bent flashing to save an hour is false economy; it is the detail most likely to leak within five years.

Ventilation is engineered, not guessed. Intake area at the soffit has to at least match exhaust area at or near the ridge, and the two have to be balanced or the attic will pull air from the house instead of from outside. Finally the shingles themselves, installed to the manufacturer's nailing pattern — placement, count and depth — because that pattern is what the wind warranty is written against.

It starts with a free on-site inspection. We get on the roof rather than assessing it from the driveway or a satellite image, photograph what we find, check the attic where we can, look at the eavestroughs and fascia at the same time, and measure. You get the photos and an itemized written quote, usually within one business day.

If the damage is storm-related, that inspection doubles as claim documentation. We can meet your adjuster on-site, walk the roof with them, and supply the scope and measurements the insurer needs. On most approved claims, homeowners pay only their deductible.

Once you approve, we handle the permit, order material and give you a firm start date. Install day begins with protection — landscaping, decks, siding and windows covered before anything comes off the roof. Tear-off, deck inspection, membrane, flashing and shingles follow in sequence, and most residential re-roofs finish in one to two days.

The job ends with a walkthrough and a magnetic nail sweep of the property, driveway and lawn. You get the workmanship warranty in writing along with the manufacturer's material registration. If something we installed fails within that warranty, we come back and fix it — that is the entire promise, and it is why our name stays on the roof.

West through Bearspaw, Springbank, Cochrane and Bragg Creek to Canmore. South through De Winton, Okotoks, High River, Diamond Valley and Nanton. East through Chestermere, Langdon and Strathmore to Three Hills and Drumheller.

Acreages are a normal part of the schedule rather than an exception. A country-residential roof in Rocky View or Foothills County is bigger, more exposed and further from a supply yard than its city equivalent, which changes staging, waste handling and how a crew's day is planned. We price that in up front rather than discovering it on install day.
