Sundre Exteriors

Sundre is a Mountain View County town at the western edge of the agricultural belt, where the prairie gives way to forestry country along the Red Deer River. That setting drives everything about how exteriors need to be built here: heavier snow accumulation than the flat land east of it, mature conifer cover, and a wildfire interface that residents and the county both take seriously.

Snow load and ice damming come first. Accumulation sits longer and deeper here than in Calgary, which makes ice damming at the eave a near-certainty rather than a possibility every winter. That means ice-and-water membrane well past code minimum at the eaves and in every valley, and it makes attic ventilation genuinely critical — an unbalanced attic in Sundre will build dams every season regardless of what shingle is on the roof.

Conifer cover comes second. Spruce and pine drop needles year-round, and needles are the debris most likely to reach a downspout and mat at the outlet, where the blockage stays invisible until the trough overflows. Fine stainless micro-mesh is the only guard style that addresses it; coarse perforated guards pass needles straight through and change nothing.

Wildfire is third. Sundre sits in the wildland-urban interface along the forestry corridor, and structures in interface fires are lost to ember cast rather than to a wall of flame. Non-combustible James Hardie fibre cement will not ignite from embers, and enclosed properly vented soffit matters for the same reason — open eaves catch embers, and an attic fire takes the house.

Acreage and ranch work around Sundre, Bergen, Cremona, Water Valley and out toward Caroline and James River is a normal part of our schedule. Those properties have large roof areas, real conifer debris loads, long eave runs and drainage that has to be planned around a septic field and a well head. We schedule them as whole-site visits and check the approach a loaded materials truck can actually use before quoting — approaches through trees are the constraint out here more often than the drawing is.

The Town of Sundre handles permits inside the boundary and Mountain View County governs the surrounding parcels, with different rules on structure size and on siting relative to a well head, septic field or right-of-way. Shop and oversized garage builds are common out here and we handle whichever applies.
